Walking the trails and via ferratas
The province of Belluno is the kingdom of Dolomite hiking: a dense network of CAI paths, equipped routes and alte vie crossing the Belluno Dolomites National Park and the main mountain groups, from the Pale di San Martino to the Civetta, from the Vette Feltrine to the Cadore. Routes are graded on the classic Italian hiking scale (T, E, EE, EEA), so you can choose between family-friendly walks and multi-day traverses reserved for experienced hikers.
The Alte Vie of the Dolomites
The most complete way to discover the Belluno Dolomites on foot is the eight historic Alte Vie, long traverses linking hut to hut across mountain groups that differ in shape and atmosphere. Stages, difficulty and itineraries for each route are gathered on the page dedicated to the Alte Vie of the Dolomites.
The via ferratas
For those looking for a more mountaineering experience, the Belluno Dolomites offer some of the finest and most popular via ferratas in the Alps: from the Ferrata degli Alleghesi on the Civetta wall, among the most demanding and historic, to the equipped routes of the Cristallo group and the Tofane above Cortina, through to the more accessible lines in the Pelmo group and the Vette Feltrine. Every ferrata requires a helmet, a harness and a certified via ferrata set, as well as solid experience of moving on rock.
Walks and family outings
Easier itineraries are not lacking either, suitable for those walking with children: the strolls around Lake Misurina and Lake Santa Croce, the nature trails of the Belluno Dolomites National Park and the valley-floor mule tracks in the Valbelluna offer Dolomite views without demanding climbs.
