On the last weekend of September, Falcade celebrates the return of its herds from the summer pastures with what is probably the most colourful of the Agordino transhumance festivals. Se Desmonteghea is not a re-enactment: the mountain dairies of the Val Biois really do come down, and the village turns out to meet them.

What to expect

The most awaited moment is the Saturday morning parade, when animals decked out for the occasion and decorated carts cross the old centre alongside the herders. The centre of gravity then shifts to the Piana di Falcade, the wide grassy expanse in the middle of the village, where the local produce fair, the craft markets, the food and wine stands and the marquee are set up. Over the weekend, bands, folk groups from the Agordino valleys, traditional music and children’s activities follow one another.

The festival is organised by the Gruppo Folk Union Ladina Val Biois.

• The parade of the animals takes place in the morning: to watch it, it is worth being in the village early.
