Four letters and two thousand years. The name of the Passo Giau commemorates no saint and no family: it simply says what the place is. From Latin iŭgum to the Ladin forms giou and giau, the story of a pass that was a crossing, a pasture and a contested border.
The name Staulanza comes from «stavolo», the seasonal high-mountain dwelling that made it possible to live and work on the pastures for part of the year. The Treccani documents it and explicitly names the pass: behind a col crossed today by cars and bicycles survives the memory of the working mountain.
In 1927, on a pass in the Belluno Dolomites, the cold and a jammed wheel gave Tullio Campagnolo the idea for the quick release: the story of how the Croce d’Aune pass changed cycling worldwide.
